Compaction of the Hilfiker
Wall Backfill was tested using a nuclear density gauge in accordance with nuclear methods
ASTM D-2922 & 3017. Compaction test results met or exceeded the minimum requirement of
95% of Modified Proctor (ASTM D-1557). Moisture contents were near optimum. Work was
delayed on Thursday and Friday due to rain.
E) Miscellaneous
No work performed during the week.
II) Underground Working
A) Drilling
No work performed during the week.
B) Mine Shaft/Stope Remediation
Underground workings 2036 and 2040 located at Transfer Station #5 were excavated and
backfilled with Coarse Shaft Backfill using one CAT 320 excavator.
The initial lift was compacted using the back of the excavator bucket. The final lift was
compacted using a CAT vibratory smooth drum roller a minimum of four passes over the entire
surface to 3-feet below finished grade. Two layers of Geogrid were placed spanning 5-feet each
side of the opening. A minimum 6-inch layer of Select Structural Fill separates the two layers of
Geogrid as per the Remediation Plan dated 7 April 2009. AMEC observed the remediation process
on a full time basis.
Nuclear density tests (ASTM D-2922 &3017) were performed on the Select Structural Fill layers.
Test results were greater than 95% of Standard Proctor (ASTM D-698). Moisture contents were
near optimum.
Underground working 2016 (connected to the Tornado Shaft) located within the shoulder of LOB
Delivery Road was exposed due to site grading and rain. The area was already flagged off and will
be remediated when the weather improves. Underground working 2030 (Raven Shaft) which was
previously flagged with lath and safety ribbon, showed no further subsidence from the rain.
C) Lateral/Slot Remediation
No work performed during shift.
III) Storm Water Management Structures
A) Best Management Practices (BMP)
Silt fencing has been put in place and Best Management Practices are being observed throughout
the LOB project.
B) Roadside ditch
A Komatsu 800 excavator has excavated the roadside ditch between stations 17+00 (+/-) to 23+00
(+/-).
