Colowyo C-1981-019
18 August 2009
Pg 3/9
Hydrologic Balance (cont.): - The West Pit Pond (NPDES 008A) contained a small
amount of water approximately two feet below the gated discharge valve and was
not discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond embankment was stable
and well vegetated and no erosional problems were noted. There was a small
amount of water in the presettling sump, which has been-overgrown with cattails.
The riprapped ditch leading into the West Pit Pond from the West Pit Fill was stable at
the time of the inspection.
- The East Taylor Pond (NPDES 01 OA) contained water approximately seven feet
below the top of the discharge pipe (one foot below the bottom of the weep hole)
and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. With the reclamation work
being performed immediately above the pond (see Backfilling and Grading, below,
for details) this pond will receive reclaimed/disturbed runoff for the first time in a
number of years. Previously, the pond had been "walled-off" from the pit and all
runoff had been allowed to accumulate in the pit. The majority of the unregraded
spoils in the East Pit watershed will still drain to the pit so this area will have time to
stabilize. The pond embankment was well vegetated and stable at the time of the
inspection and no erosional problems were noted.
- West Taylor Pond (NPDES 011 A) - The West Taylor Pond contained water
approximately 12 feet below the top of the discharge pipe and 8 feet below the
bottom of the weep hole and was not discharging at the time of the inspection. This
pond was cleaned in July, with the Bower Brothers removing approximately 4,000
cubic yards of sediment. Due to the snow holding in the drainage, the vegetation on
the embankment (both inslopes and outslopes) has come in very nicely. Some of the
vegetation on the top of the embankment was disturbed by the equipment
mobilized for cleaning but it should come back. The emergency spillway is a
riprapped channel. It was stable at the time of the inspection. *See the picture of
the West Taylor Pond at the end of this inspection*.
- The Section 16 Pond (NPDES 009A) contained water approximately eight feet below
the top of the discharge pipe and 18 inches below the bottom of the weep hole and
was not discharging at the time of the inspection. The pond embankment was well
vegetated and stable and no erosional problems were noted.
- The Work Area Pond (NPDES 002A) contained water approximately 18 inches from
the top of the discharge pipe (just below the weep hole) and was not discharging at
the time of the inspection. The pond embankment was well vegetated and stable
and no erosional problems were noted.
- The entire length of the Section 16 collection ditch was walked from the Section 16
Pond to the point where it intersects the South Collection Ditch (approximately 2,300
feet). The ditch is mostly a grass-lined ditch with a few short runs where there is small
riprap in the ditch. The ditch was very well vegetated and stable at the time of the
inspection. There were no erosional problems noted in the ditch bottom or on sides
of the ditch.
- The Section 16 Fill ditch was walked at the time of the inspection (approximately 600
feet). This is a short ditch spur that drains into the Section 16 Perimeter Ditch. The
ditch has riprap and grass in the channel and remains stable. No erosional problems
were noted in the ditch or on the sides of the ditch.
