WATER MONITORING
• Water sampling for the site was not designed to be responsive to the RML. Surface water
sampling continues to be conducted pursuant to the NPDES discharge permit. Groundwater
sampling is conducted for the purpose of the mining permit pursuant to the DRMS regulations.
Surface Water
Surface water in the vicinity of the licensed facilities that may be impacted by site activities
consists of Ralston Creek. Ralston Creek is a tributary of the South Platte River system and
empties into Ralston Reservoir and Upper or Lower Long Lakes. These reservoirs are owned
and managed by the Denver Water utility as a public drinking water supply. The potential
influence of routine site activities on the creek is monitored on a monthly basis by collecting a
grab sample of the stream flow for dissolved and suspended uranium and dissolved and
suspended radium. Historic and 2009 results are displayed on the figures below for dissolved
uranium.
The following monitoring locations were sampled in 2009.
¦ One (1) monitoring location above any potential site activity, used as background above
the Waste Dump pile (AWD);
¦ One (1) monitoring location below the mine waste rock piles to quantify and separate any
potential influence of the waste rock from licensed activities (A001);
• One (1) monitoring location at the domestic well;
¦ One (1) monitoring location at the discharge point for the site wastewater treatment plant
to quantify the influence of the discharge on surface water; no discharge occurred at this
station over the past year, therefore no samples were collected (D001);
¦ One (1) monitoring location at the east property boundary of the site (set up by DRMS as
the compliance point) to quantify the overall influence of potential site discharges on the
creek (BPL);
¦ One (1) monitoring well located at the first bridge below property line (FBRG);
¦ One (1) monitoring well located Above Red Hill (ARH); and
¦ One (1) monitoring location approximately two point five (2.5) miles downstream of the
site at the Long-Lake head gate used to divert water between the lakes in the reservoir
system (LLHG).
21
