INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
TO: EDNA MINE FINE, 198 1, SL11
FROM: JANET BINN
SUBJECT: CONSUL TION TH R UTT UNTY WEED DEPARTMENT
DATE: 8/31/2009
CG [CLICK HERE AND TYPE NAME]
On August 31, 2009, Greg Brown, Routt County Weed Manager, returned my call regarding uptake action of
Milestone ® herbicide. I had initiated a call to the Routt Count Weed Department on 8/28/2009, to inquire the
mode of action of Milestone ® herbicide on Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense). We had observed Canada thistle
at the Edna mine 2 weeks after the operator reported that the weeds had been sprayed with Milestone®
herbicide (sprayed 8/9/2009, observed 8/24/2009). The patches of Canada thistle along the LOM access road
on the east side of the Moffat area appeared healthy and did not show signs of epistasis or nodding flower
heads. Although I had looked up information regarding Milestone® on the Dow website (www.dowagro.com),
it was not clear how quickly a visual result of chemical uptake was expected.
Mr. Brown provided additional information regarding Milestone's® herbicide action. He informed me that
Milestone® is the preferred chemical for Canada thistle control. Some weed applicators mix Telar ® or Escort
® with Milestone S. Recommended times for spraying are when plant is young in the spring, up until bud
stage. Spraying at this time improves chemical uptake and translocation. But it is acceptable to spray even
when thistle is in flower, but once thistle has flowered the chemical will not be effective in killing the current
year's seed crop. If there is adequate moisture and the plant has not dried up yet, the chemical may still be
taken up and affect the roots. Routt County Weed Department recommends application of herbicide
(Milestone® preferred) in September, when additional soil moisture and cooler temperatures often result in a
second growth of the thistles.
Spraying the plants even at flowering stage will stress the root stores, and a second spraying in September
should provide additional mortality to these noxious weeds. Visually ou might not observe a1a# result for
several weeks after spraying, and then the plants will just die. Mileston ends to take a little bit longer before
you see a visual result. Routt County Weed Department recommends a heavy rate of 7oz/acres for Canada
thistle.
