III. COMMENTS - COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made during
the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection and the
facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
Support Facilities: BME has recently drilled B Vent Shaft #3. The concrete pad is in place and a vent
cowling has been constructed around the shaft. The shaft was constructed with raise-bore methods so
there is no cuttings pile remaining at the surface. There are two large gravel piles remaining on the drill
pad. BME is in the process of sealing the space between the annulus and the shaft. The pad still needs
final dressing up, the topsoil stockpile on the pad will need shaping and to be stabilized and signed. Due
to the current activities at this pad, these items are considered regular maintenance.
BME was in the process of constructing a pad for placement of an emergency generator. This location is
south of the vent fan on the edge of the road to the explosives storage area.
Reclamation Success: Reclaimed refuse pile 1 was inspected. BME reseeded this pile in 1997 due to
excessive Cheatgrass on the reclamation. The North side of the pile had fair cover with crested
wheatgrass and forage kochia the visually dominant vegetation. Cheatgrass is present in this portion of
the reclamation but does not appear dominant. The top of the pile is dominated by annual mustard and
cheatgrass though other perennial grasses are present, though infrequent, and forage kochia is present
with a high frequency. The pile is not rilling and appears stable. Grasshoppers are present in abundance
this season.
Overall the mine operations are in good condition and well maintained. Completion of the B Vent #3
pad and stabilizing the topsoil stockpile at that location was the only item identified as needing attention.
Weed control throughout was good considering the absence of noxious weeds throughout the site.
4 of 5 WHITE-File YELLOW-Operator PINK-Specialist
