The mining company has indicated that since there is no longer any active mining or blasting and limited human activities on the reclamation areas, there is no longer any need for wildlife monitoring. CDOW concurs that under these conditions, there is no longer any need for wildlife monitoring by the mining company. The initial wildlife monitoring was for a winter aerial survey for big game and monitoring for Columbian sharp- tailed grouse feks, eagle and raptor activity, and sandhill crane activity. The quality of the wildlife monitoring and reclamation by Seneca Coal Company, L.C.C. for the Yoast Mine has been beneficial and greatly appreciated. The Colorado Division of Wildlife would like to continue the ability to monitor the raptor activity and especially grouse leks in the area and would like to request from Seneca Coal Company, L.L.C. that access to the property be, maintained to allow the DOW to carry on monitoring activities. We will contact the Seneca Coal Company, L.L.C. in the near future concerning maintaining access for this purpose. We have appreciated the opportunity to work together with Seneca.
