The debitage assemblage consists of nine tertiary flakes made of white, banded brown and
white, gray and semi-translucent white chert and red and white quartzite. One flake tool was also
recorded. The flake tool is made from a large secondary flake of brown chert. The flake is
retouched on two lateral edges and on the distal end which was likely used as a scraper.
Eligibility and Management Recommendations. This site does not retain integrity.
Deposition is not continuous. Although there are pockets of aeolian sand, the site is largely eroded
and deflated. The flakes are in an erosional setting and were likely redeposited to this location or
are resting on a deflated surface. Because there is no continuous deposition, there is no potential
for intact and continuous subsurface deposits that could contribute information to the prehistory of
the area. Therefore, this site is recommended not eligible for inclusion on the NRHP. No further
work is recommended.
5RT2744 (MM8998)
Site Description. This newly recorded prehistoric lithic scatter is located about four miles
south of the Yampa River. The site, which measures approximately 160 m N/S x 48 m E/W, is on
a north-facing slope on the west side of County Road 27. Two north/northeast-flowing drainages
bound the site. Scotchmans Gulch is east of the site and an unnamed, intermittent drainage is
located to the west. Their confluence is approximately 100 m northeast of the site. Deposition is
alluvial and the sediments on-site are slopewashed. The site is vegetated primarily by grasses and
low sagebrush with some mountain mahogany.
W
2 CM
Figure 5 5RT2744
projectile point.
Artifacts found on the site include one projectile point fragment
(Figure 5), two biface fragments, five retouched flakes, 42 tertiary
flakes and one mano. The projectile point fragment is an expanding
base fragment made of translucent white chert that probably dates to
the Late Prehistoric. One biface is manufactured from semi-translucent
white chert; the other is composed of brown chert. All five retouched
flakes are made of white chert. The predominant debitage material is
white chert with small quantities of tan chert, pink chert, and gray
quartzite. The mano is composed of red sandstone. Pecking, grinding
and faceting was identified on one surface.
Eligibility and Management Recommendations. This site
does not retain integrity. The cultural material at Site 5RT2744 consists of a sparse scattering of
lithic artifacts and one sandstone mano. No features or activity areas were observed at the surface.
Although some alluvial deposition is present, careful examination of the drainage cutbanks which
run the length of the western and eastern site boundaries revealed no features or artifacts eroding
from the banks. Based on this examination, it appears that this site is confined to the surface. The
site area has been disturbed by slopewash and some flakes have likely been redeposited to this
location. There is little potential that intact cultural deposits are present below the surface. Because
of this, MAC recommends this site as not eligible for inclusion on the NRHP. No further work is
recommended.
5RT2745 (MM7297)
38
