My analysis included a comprehensive site visit and review of previous geologic borings in the
area. The soils are Predominately glacial alluvium placers, silty sands interbedded with large round rock
and cobble structures.
Sidewall stability of these soil structures is relatively good, provided overburden pressures are *•,;n;n,;,Pd.
The most influential of these pressures are excessive moisture content of the embankment soils and good
grading and drainage operations are in place to prevent saturating the soil embankment and controlling
the spoils. It is recommended that daily inspections on operational areas are done by the pit foremen and
any hazards that are identified are immediately reported, Comprehensive monthly inspections of all areas
in and around the pit should be accomplished by site safety personnel.
I have attached a detail which illustrates the proposed operation at this site. The following elements are
critical to ensuring cut-slope stability:
- Maintaining setbacks from property lines and spoil rows
Controlling surface water runoff
- Controlling ground-water, if encountered
- Ensuring spoil rows do not exceed maximum dimensions
In conclusion, it is my opinion that the operation of an open pit mine at this location can be effectively
conducted without impacting surrounding properties. Strict adherence to spoil placement and safety
inspections will ensure a safe and stable embankment.
We appreciate this opportunity to serve you. Please do not hesitate to contact this office if you have any
questions. - -
Sincerely, 0 RE
Erik D. Mitchell, P.E.
`S'sic;IvaLE?
7 7 9 . 6 8 7 . 2 4 4 7 ( W W W.
