ERO Resources
these sites is reported to be less than on finer textured sites. Colorado
• wildrye has been found to be characteristic of trampling and of shallow
soils. This species will maintain itself well under both of these
conditions. Colorado wildrye furnishes adequate forage only during the
spring. Another spring forage producer is cheatgrass. This species is
palatable and used only during the early spring. In addition, cheatgrass
has been found to exhibit characteristics that allow it near complete
utilization of surface soil moisture and continuous seed production.
cheatgrass is favored on sandy soils. This species is not tolerant of
heavy grazing pressures. Indian ricegrass is characteristic of sandy soil
areas and is a known sand binder. This species is also valuable as
forage. Blue gramagrass is characteristic of loamy soils and an excellent
source of forage.
Annual grasses and fortis contribute substantial numbers to all the
vegetation types occurring. This life form occurs in annual
forb-dominated stands in areas of high, perennial disturbarx:e. The major
annual forb species include African mustard (~lcomia africana), stickseed
• i1 a~la occidentalis) and peppergrass ILaTidium derisiflorum and L.~
oerfoliatum),
(2) Threatened a*d Erdannnred Soeoies:
Several species considered to be restricted to the Uintah Basin and
included as threatened and endangered species were found by Welsh in his
survey of the permit area IWelch and Neese 1979). Species identified by
this survey include Duchesne milkvetch••(A~ str.~ya]us duchesne), ephedra
buckwheat~`•iFrioaonm enhedrides), Uintah her idi m lMirabilis aliroes),
Jones parthenium (Parthenium ligtilatum) and Graham beardtongue (psl~temon
9rahamii). Based on an earlier review tWelsh 1978 and Welsh and Thorns
1979), the authors recommend in these reports that these species be
treated as follows:
o Duchesne milkvetch maintain threatened status
o ephedra buckwheat be down-graded to threatened status
•
II.F-18
