Annual Report of the Phil Sheridan Lode Mine
M-1988-081 Harry Covey - Owner, Operator
No mining or reclamation work was performed because of a wet spring and inclement
weather. 36 inches of snow in the spring and numerous heavy rains and hail storms made
it obvious that a better system to protect the shaft and thus the output flow of water in the
tunnel could be accomplished by extending the hoist shed roof to cover the adit portal.
This was accomplished by changing the slope of the roof from south drainage to north
drainage, which lets the rain and snow melt water run off in the natural drainage instead
of pooling in the portal of the adit behind the hoist shed, where it seeped into the shaft
and eventually into the mine. Several benefits resulted in this change in slope direction:
(l.) Protection of the portal area from erosion because, now, no water is allowed to
fall on the portal, thus winter freezing and thawing will be at a minimum.
(2.) Out flow in the tunnel will be the constant trickle and not subject to sporadic
storm surges in times of heavy precipitation.
(3.) Eliminating some potential hazards and offering a more secure area against
potential theft will increase safety and security.
No powder permit was applied for because I don't want the to store powder until I have a
need for it. Several target areas have been identified and a powder permit will be a
necessity in order to proceed.
Even though little has changed in the map, a map is enclosed to show the change and
extent of coverage of the extended roof.
The telluride mineralization is of interest to students of mineralogy and geology. The
mine is the subject of several papers on the origin and genesis of gold deposits in the
Gold Hill district as well as other related subjects including the history of Colorado.
Students are always welcome to tour the surface and dump of this mine in the interest of
education. I have used the information gathered in my research on the origin of gold in
the enclosed paper on "pseudomorphs" which your geologists may find interesting.
Harry Covey
Owner, Operator of the Phil Sheridan Lode
Author of the enclosed paper on pseudomorphs.
