Ironsprings Divide Metals and Minerals
'There are numerous reports that were written on the -
potential wealth in metals and minerals that are found in
the very large=deposit contained in the Ironsprings
Divide, Moffat County, Craig Colorado. Some of these'
reports were written before Moffat County was formed.
This was once part of Routt County, and was later
changed to Moffat County. Gold was first discovered in..
what was known as the Four Mile District. Hugh
Morrison made this discovery in 1895. Later it was found
that in addition to gold, it also contained a heavy
mineral suit rich in titanium, zirconium, garnet, monazite
and other minerals. W.C Overstreet, stated that a sample
taken from the black sand from the lower drainage of
Timberlake, contained 600 pounds of titanium per ton,
as well as the other heavy minerals. Herbert Hoover
wrote a report on the gold that was found in the
Ironsprings Divide, and stated that the gold does not
show evidence of being transported for any distance.
The gold has sharp edges and is not worn from
traveling. The early day prospectors and geologist tried
to find the source of this gold and were unsuccessful.
Then in 1966, the USGS led by Paul K. Theobald and
three other members, looked for the source. They found
that the area was very large and contained heavy
mineral suit rich in monazite and locally gold. They were
also unsuccessful in finding the source of the gold just
like all the early prospectors and geologists were. There
are many more reports on this area, to many to mention.
The above two were done by some of the most known
researchers, President Herbert Hoover, and the United
States Geological Survey.
