7 DRHS is concerned about vertical ground water migration and cross-contamination
that might occur due to drill holes remaining open for extended periods between
drilling and completion. Please include in the aquifer testing program collection of
parameters that will allow evaluation and prediction of vertical migration and cross-
contamination that might occur as a result of leaving drill holes open for 30 days.
AMSO Response:
Please see AMSO Responses to deficiency question number 6 of the July 7 DRMS letter
and to deficiency question number 10 of the June 17 DRMS letter.
8. Pg. 17 describes drilling and completion procedures for Horizontal Bore Hole 1.
Will this hole be cemented the entire length? If so, how is this accomplished on the
non-vertical lengths of a directional hole?
AMSO Response:
While a horizontal borehole was proposed on page 17 in the Notice of Intent to Conduct
Prospecting submitted to the DRMS on June 30, 2008, the current plan involves one hole,
the heater-producer well. This hole will be drilled and completed as described on page
29 of the current request for Modification No. 2 to the NOI (the POD).
AMSO will use standard cementing techniques throughout cemented portions of the
heater-producer well. These standard techniques are anticipated to result in thorough
cementing of the 113/4-inch casing in the borehole above the retort interval. After
cementing, AMSO will conduct testing to insure mechanical integrity of the heater-
producer well bore above the retort.
9. Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasures Plan, Pg. 15: Applicant must add
DRHS to the list of contacts for spill notification.
AMSO Response:
DRMS has been added to the list of contacts for spill notification.
10. What are the anticipated environmental and hydrological impacts in the event of a
release of the compound Dowtherm, and what is the remediation plan in the event of a
Dowtherm release?
Dowtherm was proposed as a possible heat transfer medium in the original concept
proposed by EGL Resources. The POD (NOI Modification No. 2) presents both the
original concept proposed by EGL Resources as well as its evolution over the past few
years. The use of Dowtherm is not proposed for the Pilot Test. The evolution from a
heat transfer medium such as Dowtherm to the process proposed by AMSO is described
in Appendix 4-1 of the POD.
IL What is the margin of error in mating the two directionally drilled holes that
converge from opposite directions?
110 East 3' Street.
