(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID # M-1979-155
INSPECTION DATE 08/06/09 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS PSH
OBSERVATIONS
The Dotsero Cinder Pit, File No. M-1979-155, was inspected by Peter Hays with the Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety (Division) as part of the Division's monitoring inspection program. Mr. Cary Griffin with the
Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) was present during the inspection.
The Dotsero Cinder Pit is located 5.25 miles west of Gypsum, Colorado on Highway 24 and % mile north of I-
70. The site was previously inspected by the Division on June 27, 2006. The site is permitted for 9.2 acres of
disturbance and has an intermittent status.
Based on the annual reports submitted by CDOT the site has not been mined in several years. Mr. Griffin
stated CDOT has no plans to mine the site in the future. The site is divided into three sections; a pit area,
upper stockpile area and lower stockpile area. The site appears unchanged from the previous inspection. No
evidence of recent mining activity was observed during the inspection. The highwall was approximately 20
feet high and 65 feet long at a 1:1 slope. The pit floor was mostly bare ground with some annual weeds and
grasses. A large amount of imported waste material has been dumped in the east end of the lower stockpile
area. Mr. Griffin stated the material was not imported by CDOT except for the Glenwood Spring landslide
material in 2004. He stated CDOT was aware all imported material would be required to be removed prior to
permit release. The site appeared stable and no erosion was noted during the inspection.
An entrance sign was posted and permit boundary markers were observed as required by Rule 3.1.12. No
problems were noted during the inspection. There is no financial warranty required for this site, however a
performance warranty is posted. The Division encourages CDOT to reclaim the pit if there are no plans to
mine the cinder material in the future.
I & E Contact Address
NAME Jason Smith
OPERATOR Colorado Department of Transportation
STREET 222S6 th St, RM 317
CITY/STATE/ZIP Grand Junction, Colorado 81501
cc:
?
