The portals consist of four
entries into the "F" seam outcrop. The portals were primarily used for ventilation, supply, and personnel transport.
The No. 5 Portals have been sealed, backfilled, and reclaimed.
The 5A Portals and associated facilities are located in the highwall of an abandoned strip pit. There are four portal
entries at the No. 5A Portal, two are for return air, one is for intake air, and the fourth contains the conveyor belt.
Main ventilation fans for the No. 5 and 6 Mines are located at the two return portals. One new opening to the surface
is planned to improve airflow. A shaft will be developed from the surface to the No. 5 and No. 6 Mines. The shaft
will be located above the existing No. 5A Portals, within the existing sediment control system. Portal heaters may be
installed on this shaft. (Note: The shaft will be reclaimed along with the No. 5A Portals.) For location of the
ventilation fans, refer to the No. 5 Mine Plan Map (Map 23). Oil storage tanks, a rock-dust tank, a supply yard, and a
sediment pond are located in the No. 5A Portal area. Drainage and sediment control techniques are discussed later in
this section. Under care and maintenance status, the No. 5A Portals have been fitted with temporary covers to limit
access.
MINE FACILITIES
The surface facilities associated with the No. 5 and 6 Mines are shown on the Structures and Renewable Resources
Map (Map 25). Listed on Table 56, Eagle Mines Existing Structures, are the major structures currently existing at the
Eagle Mines. The table illustrates the approximate construction dates of the facilities as well as the dates of last
modification. All facilities including ancillary facilities used at the Eagle No. 5 Mine will be used for the No. 6 Mine.
A new Multiple Services building and 100,000 gallon water tank were constructed during 1989. The location is
shown on Maps 25 and 26.
No. 5 Portal Area Main Office - The main offices were originally located near RAG EC Village. Offices were
relocated near the No. 5 Portal. The offices consisted of mobile trailers and housed the Mine Manager, safety and
training personnel, engineering staff, and other mine personnel. As of October 1999, only the maintenance trailer
remained. The maintenance trailer was removed in late 1999.
Shop - A new Shop was constructed in 1981 to replace the old shop located near the now abandoned RAG EC
Village. The Shop is used to perform all maintenance activities associated with the underground mining operations.
The Shop is located near the No. 5 Portal.
Warehouse - The CMLRD approved construction of a Warehouse and storage yard in September 1983. The approval
allowed for the construction of a building 60 x 100 feet, with a loading dock. The Warehouse was constructed
adjacent, and connected to, the Shop, on a previously disturbed area. The Warehouse and storage yard are used for
material storage (parts and supplies) and distribution of materials to support the underground operations.
Bathhouse - The Men's Bathhouse, located near the No. 5 Portal, was used for showering by mine personnel. The
separate Women's Bathhouse was located in the same area. A Visitor's Bathhouse was located adjacent to the
women's bathhouse. Both the Women's and Visitor's bathhouses have been removed from the site. The Men's
• Bathhouse was demolished, the resulting demolition debris placed in the permitted solid waste facility at the No. 9
Portal location, and the associated disturbance area topsoiled and reseeded, in 2008.
Permit Renewal RN08-05 2.05-8 01/15/09
