II
depression sufficient to allow wildlife to cross over the pit without getting trapped.
Fencing may be removed at that time. The depression thus created will be used
to contain purge water from subsequent ground water monitoring.
SAW - Core/Hydrology Holes (Pad 135-4-298)
A containment pit will be constructed on the pad adjacent to the core/hydrology
holes. This pit may be built such that there is a lined and unlined compartment or
surface containment methods may be employed instead of the lined
compartment. The unlined portion of the pit will capture drill cuttings, plus drilling
water and formation water that will be developed from the hydrology holes drilled
on each pad. Water added to these pits is expected to eventually pass into
groundwater of the Uinta formation along with rain and snowmelt that fall directly
on the pit.
The pit will be approximately 14' depth. These pits will be fenced with 3-strand
barbed wire and steel posts during the initial phase of use. This proposed pit
design is identical to that used elsewhere in the area by SFOGI for hydrology and
cored wells.
Based on extensive hydrological testing in the local area, it is known that ground
water in the Uinta, L7, L6, and L5 units typically has lower TDS concentrations
than water from the L4 and L3 units. SFOGI intends to place only water from the
Uinta, L7, L6, L5 and L4 into the pits if the field measured TDS is below 5,000
ppm. Any water that exceeds TDS concentrations of 5000 ppm measured by
field means will be trucked off site to an appropriate disposal facility.
Once the operation enters the core phase of the L4 and below, the lined portion
of the pit or surface containment will be used to capture both fluids and cuttings
that will be trucked off site to an appropriate disposal facility.
After drilling - and after hydrology testing where such testing is employed - each
pit will be backfilled with the original material from the pit (other than topsoil) to
within about 2 feet of the ground surface and sloped in order to form a shallow
depression sufficient to allow wildlife to cross over the pit without getting trapped.
Fencing may be removed at that time. The depression thus created will be used
to contain purge water from subsequent ground water monitoring.
