Ill. COMMENTS -COMPLIANCE
Below are comments on the inspection. The comments include discussion of observations made
during the inspection. Comments also describe any enforcement actions taken during the inspection
and the facts or evidence supporting the enforcement action.
This was a partial inspection of the Hamilton Mine conducted on July 8, 2009 by Mike Boulay of.
the Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety Grand Junction Field Office. There was no
representative from Honeywood Coal Company present during the inspection and there was no
activity at the mine site. Weather conditions were surety and warm. Ground conditions were
very dry.
Signs And Markers
The mine identification sign was properly displayed at the mine site entrance along the county
road that provides access to the site.
Hydrologic Balance
Sedimentation Ponds A and B were inspected. Both ponds were dry. A small portion of the liner
is showing through the riprap in the emergency spillway of pond A, but does present a significant
concern at this time. Otherwise, the pond inlets and the discharge structures at both Ponds A and
B were in good condition. Pond embankments were stable with sufficient vegetation.
Sedimentation Ponds A and B are shown in attached Photograph No.s 1 and 2 at the end of this
report.
Roads
Roads were dry and generally in good condition. Roads leading to Mine Area 1 and to Mine
Area 3 were adequately maintained. Culverts were clear of sediment and debris and functional.
The access roads to Ponds A and B were also in good condition.
Reclamation Success
No significant erosion features were noted in the reclaimed areas. A large portion of Mine Area
1 is shown in Photograph No. 3. Vegetation appears to be somewhat sparse and beginning to
turn brown. Overall the mine site remains stable and no problems were noted at any of the mine
site locations.
