(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1994-007
INSPECTION DATE: 7/23/09 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ECS_
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection for an active 112c sand and gravel operation conducted by Eric Scott
of DRMS for the Phillips County Johnson Pit site. DRMS toured the site with Phillips County representative
Randy Schafer at approximately 1445.
This is a stream channel sand and gravel operation. Mining at this site appears to have been inactive for at least
this season, and large material stockpiles are present at the southeast area of the site. There were no observed
impediments to normal stream flow through the mined area.
Although a portion of the site has been resloped and seeded, the site currently has severe issues with Canada
thistle and cheat-grass that will need to be dealt with. Some seeded grasses have begun to appear and establish,
but they are not widespread at this point.
The site entrance sign was in place and adequate, however no permit boundary markers were observed during
the inspection. These markers need to be placed to define the somewhat unusual boundaries of this permitted
area. The operator may also wish to review the existing approved reclamation plan to see if any revisions are
appropriate before reclamation proceeds beyond the stage where any needed revisions may be easily
implemented. It was also observed during the inspection that someone may be taking material from the topsoil
stockpile located on the site. The operator should try to ensure that this material remains on site for its intended
use during reclamation.
The Division would like to encourage concurrent reclamation and maintenance activities whenever possible
regardless of the intermittent operational status of a site.
I & E Contact Address
Randy Schafer
Phillips County Administrator
221 South Interocean Ave
Holyoke, CO 80734
