INTRODUCTION
A new gravel mining pit is proposed, to be named Urie Gravel Pit. It will be :located
approximately 1.0 miles northeast of the Town of Rangely, on a parcel of land owned by
Stephen A. and Elaine C. Urie (owners of the Urie Rock Company). The proposed
operation will mine only gravel, for commercial sale.
The main entrance to the pit is an existing access road that crosses private property
owned by Jeffery Peacock, then connects to Rio Blanco County Road No. 46, which in
turn connects to Colorado State Highway No. 64 at a point approximately 1.5 miles
northwest of the Town of Rangely. The portion of the existing access road that is within
the site boundary will be upgraded and extended to the boundary of the proposed pit. No
new access roads are proposed.
The office, scales and parking area is located at the entrance and contains 3.0 acres. The
entire pit area is located on a relatively flat to slightly sloped parcel of land that is north
of the White River and approximately 1,400 feet east of Rio Blanco County Road No. 46.
The site has a total area of 30.48 acres, of which 16.62 acres will be mined.
The mining will be done in three phases, of approximately 5.5 acres each. Phase 1 will be
the easterly most area, Phase 2 the center region, and Phase 3 the western area. The
phases are equal in size and should generate approximately 225,000 tons of gravel each.
Operations are planned to start in 2009 and each phase should be finished within 1 year
of commencing. This equates to a 3 year life span of the permitted area with. mining
operations completed in 2012, and reclamation completed in 2013.
The construction and operation of the gravel pit will involve the use of dozers, loaders,
rock trucks, and other heavy equipment in order to remove topsoil, overburden and
gravel. Other equipment that will be located on site during portions of the year will
consist of crushers, screening plants, truck scale office, asphalt plant and concrete plant.
