Pagel 5
18. Comment: Rule 6.4.5(2)(d) states the revegetation plan shall contain a list of the preferred species of grass,
legumes, forbs, shrubs or trees to be planted, the method and rates of seeding and planting, the estimated
availability of viable seeds in sufficient quantities of the species proposed to be used, and the proposed
time of seeding and planting. Please provide the Division the information above the for the following
revegetation areas indicated on Exhibit F - Reclamation Plan Map:
a. Habitat Diversity Area
b. Shallow Water Habitat
Response: Where shown in the drawings, a roughly equal mixture of the following species will be
planted on 50' centers in the habitat diversity area:
? Narrowleaf cottonwood (Salix angustifolia)
? Geyer willow (Salix geyeriana)
? Booth willow (Salix boothh)
? Sandbar willow (Salix exigua)
Cuttings shall be taken from live but dormant willows and cottonwoods in late fall or very early
spring before the buds start to break. Branches rather than young suckers shall be used since
suckers do not possess adequate stored energy reserves. The apical bud plus about 1-2 feet shall be
removed from each cutting prior to planting. Cuttings shall generally be at least 1/2 inch diameter
or larger. Larger diameter cuttings have more energy and stored reserves than the smaller diameter
cuttings.
Cuttings taken in late fall shall be stored in a cooler at 26-321 F until just before planting. If a cooler
is not available, cuttings shall be harvested and planted in early spring. Cuttings shall be kept in a
moist, cool, and dark environment until planting.
Prior to planting, the bottom 1/2 of the cutting shall be soaked in water for 2 to 5 days, which
initiates the growth process within the inner layer of bark. Soaking significantly increases the
survival rate of cuttings. Cuttings shall be planted to a depth that extends 3-4" into the mid-summer
water table. At least 3-4 buds should remain above ground, and no less than 1/2 the total length
must be below ground.
Cuttings shall be installed utilizing a tractor-mounted post hole digger, a one or two man post hole
digger, a soil auger, a large bar, a planting shovel, or just by pushing the cutting into moist soil,
depending on site conditions and cutting diameter. It is essential to have good contact between the
cutting and the soil in order for the roots to sprout. Air pockets around the cutting will kill the roots.
The understory shall be seeded with wetland seed mix, supplemented with Canada reedgrass,
spreading bentgrass, and meadow foxtail. The wetland seed mix is as follows:
Species Seeding Rate #PLS/acre
Spreading Bentgrass 3.5
Canada Reedgrass 3.5
Meadow Foxtail 8.0
As for the Shallow Water Habitat, Precision Excavating, Inc. plans to grade the area at 10:1
slopes and allow the entire shallow water habitat area to naturally regenerate with
herbaceous wetland vegetation.
and 6:1
emergent
The proposed seeds mixtures and plantings are readily available.
