approval of a plan for water rights augmentation. To fulfill the requirements of the Seneca II-W water
rights augmentation plan, Peabody will monitor the water pumped from the water supply Well GW-
S2W-201TC to both Pond 006 and the mine facilities. Details of the approved plan for water rights
augmentation is contained in Tab 16, Protection of the Hydrologic Balance. Appendix 16-1 presents a
summary of the monitoring required by the Colorado State Engineer's Office (Division of Natural
Resources) to ensure compliance with the plan.
Four alluvial wells installed by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1980 have been incorporated into the
Current Monitoring Program to provide monitoring data from the upper Sage Creek drainage. Wells
A1, A3, A8, and Ail are detailed in Tables 15-2 and 15-3, and their location is shown on Exhibit 7-1,
Tab 7.
The 1991 program maintained the monitoring requirements contained in the pre-October, 1991
program, although changes in the frequency of monitoring at the sites varied slightly (see Appendix
15-3). The majority of sites have their water levels monitored five times a year, or semi-annually in
the case of the new alluvial wells. Water quality samples continued to be collected on a semiannual
and triannual basis and analyzed according to the ground water parameter list contained in Appendix
15-2.
Permit Renewal 2 (November, 1995) modified the ground water monitoring program. All monitoring of
Wells 150V, 15W, 7A1, and 23A was dropped. Water quality monitoring of Wells 18OV and 18W was
dropped.
Spoil wells will be placed in the lower sections of each mining area after that area has been regraded.
Specific spoil well locations will be determined in the future based on the spring locations. Typically,
a spoil well will be located upgradient of a spoil spring, and will be used to collect water level and
quality information. Spoil water quality samples will be analyzed in the same manner as other spring
water quality samples.
Current Ground Water Monitoring Program The 1998 monitoring program (Appendix 15-3A) was
instituted upon the approval of Permit Revision 2 (II-W South Expansion, submitted 1998) The details
of changes made to the monitoring program may be found in the introduction to Appendix 15-3A.
Changes to the monitoring program were matle as a result of Permit Revision 3 (Sage
Creek/Wolf Creek coal mining) submitted in 2002. Changes are detailed in a section titled
"Permit Revision No. 3 Changes " in that appendix.
r,
~.J
TR-52 20 Revised 03/OS
