The site is quite level and is just west of the Middle Fork of the South Platte,
adjacent to ongoing mining and materials processing. It is planned that mine reclamation
activities will be carried out as the mining occurs and not delayed until all of the miring is finished.
Enclosed are copies of the soil map unit of the soil at the site, a soils description and a seeding
recommendation for use when mining ceases and reclamation commences. A comment on this
seeding mixture: if enough topsoil is stockpiled to allow for 4-6 inches to be placed on the mined
area then tufted hairgrass should be kept in the suggested mixture, but this grass prefers normal
to higher than normal soil moisture so if sandy or gravelly material is left as the growth medium,
we recommend that the hairgrass be omitted from the punned seeding mix.
Fertilizer should be applied prior to drilling or broadcasting and packing the seed mix, at a rate of
35-40 pounds of actual Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and if needed, Potassium (K). A soil test
needs to be taken to determine the appropriate amount of needed elements-again, potash may
not be required or, its rate may not be need to be as high as the N and P.
If you have any questions or need clarifications, contact me.
Leon S.
