.1(mmirY 15, 2008 <br />P(ui? e _59 <br />The phreatic surface might be higher in the spoils than assumed in the analyses if the <br />porosity of the spoils is less than expected. Low porosity might be due to greater than expected <br />spoil compaction or a higher percentage of tines contained in the spoils. The downdip slope of <br />the spoil pile would be less stable in this case because the base of the pile creeps. It is important <br />to drainage the spoils. This can be done by gravitational draining to remove groundwater. It is <br />recommended that the first 3 ft of spoils be coarse till with less than 10% fines. as discussed <br />above. This will improve drainage of spoils and increases stability. The coarse fill base should <br />be achievable by dumping spoils from the edge of the pile so that the coarse materials roll to the <br />bottom toe area. <br />Agapito Associates. Inc.
