West Elk Mine 2008 Annual Hydrology Report 51
• 4.5.6 Mine Water Polishing Pond
Water pumped from the mine through the mine water pumping facility (MWPF) is directed to the
mine water polishing pond for settling prior to discharge. Once treated, the water flows to
Sylvester Gulch through Outfall 017A.
4.5.7 WWTP Polishing Pond
Effluent from MCC's wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharges to the WWTP polishing
pond prior to discharge. After retention in the polishing pond, the water is discharged through
Outfall 007A and flows to sediment pond MB-2R.
4.6 Mine Water Inflows
In WY 2008, there were no significant groundwater inflows. Minor inflows totaling 58.4 ac-ft
occurred in the F Seam (10 ac-ft), faults (32.26 ac-ft), and other miscellaneous groundwater
inflows (16.13 ac-ft) (Map IA and Map 1B, Figure 9) (MCC, 2009). Section 3.4 summarizes the
mine sampling protocols.
4.6.1 NW Panels Sealed Sump
• During WY 2008, MCC water from the NW Panels Sealed Sump was drained through a borehole
to the NE Panels Sealed Sump. There will be no further discharge from the NW Panels sealed
sump to the Lone Pine Pipeline, as the pipeline was removed when the Lone Pine Gulch facilities
area was reclaimed in 2004 (MCC, 2009).
4.6.2 NE Panels Sealed Sump
During WY 2008, water collected in the NE Panels Sealed Sump was pumped out of the sump
using the mine water pumping facility (MWPF), up the vertical well and discharged to Sylvester
Gulch. The discharge from MWPF to Sylvester Gulch was 444.61 ac-ft (Figure 9) (MCC, 2009).
A clarifying pond and energy dissipater system is located at this discharge point.
5.0 ASSESSMENT OF MINE-INDUCED HYDROLOGIC IMPACTS AND
ANTICIPATED IMPACTS IN WY 2009
5.1 Surface Water
MCC maintains a network of 23 stream flow gauging stations and 8 temperature monitoring
stations throughout the permit and lease areas (Table 2). The locations of the surface water
• monitoring stations are shown on Map 2. Daily mean flow summary tables are presented in
Appendix A. Surface water flow hydrographs are presented in Appendix B and the field and
June 2009 HydroGeo, Inc.
