MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID#: M-1994-117 PAGE: 3
INSPECTION DATE: 6-12-09 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ACS
collected from the bottom of the hole and placed in the bucket. The
lid was affixed to the bucket and labeled with location, date, time,
and sampler's names.
The nitrile gloves used during collection of the first sample were
discarded. All visible tailing residues were rinsed off the shovel
using tailing pond water, and then the shovel was brought back to the
decontamination area. The inspectors donned new nitrile gloves. The
plastic brush was rinsed with distilled water, and used to scrub the
shovel using more distilled water. The shovel was then thoroughly
rinsed with distilled water; the shovel was placed on the tarp. A
bucket and lid were inspected and found to be free of debris or
residue, and were thoroughly rinsed with distilled water, and placed
on the tarp, see photo no. 5. The nitrile gloves were discarded and
new gloves were donned. The sample shovel, bucket, and lid were hand
carried up to the tailing pond and a hole was excavated in the
northeast quadrant of the pond, see photo nos. 6 and 7. The upper
few inches were a dry crust, which was cast to the side of the
excavation; underneath the crust were saturated tailing. Attempts to
excavate a sample hole were prevented because the saturated tailing
immediately oozed back into the hole. Approximately 3.5 gallons of
sample were collected. The lid was affixed to the bucket and labeled
with location, date, time, and sampler's names.
From the time of collection, the samples have been under inspectors'
physical control or in a locked DRMS field vehicle, or in a locked
cabinet within a locked, limited access equipment room at DRMS
headquarters. The samples will be analyzed using the synthetic
precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) at the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) laboratory located in Golden, Colorado. The
DRMS is coordinating with EPA to deliver the samples in a way that
will meet the lab's acceptance criteria. This will involve cutting
down the samples collected to deliver about a pound of sub-sample to
the lab. The rest of the sample will be retained by DRMS until the
results are available, then the sample remainder will either be
returned to the tailing pond or otherwise properly disposed. SPLP
analysis for mercury has a shorter holding time than for all the
other metals, and the EPA lab has notified DRMS that their schedule
will not permit analysis for mercury prior to expiration of the
holding time limit. The mercury analysis will still be done, but the
results will be flagged; all other analyses will be done within the
method specified holding time.
One of the two tailing filled prospect pits has been covered over
