(Page 2)
MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1977-348
INSPECTION DATE: 6/19/09 INSPECTOR'S INITIALS: ECS_
OBSERVATIONS
This was a routine monitoring inspection for an active 112c limestone operation conducted by Eric Scott of
DRMS for the Boettcher Quarry site. DRMS met with site operator Michael Toelle on site at approximately
0930 and toured the site with him.
The required site entrance postings and site boundary markers need to be refreshed and/or replaced as no site
entrance sign was present.
Mining and reclamation activities have been completed at the site, and the revegetation is coming in well at this
time. Weed control efforts will need to be maintained to keep noxious species from establishing in reclaimed
areas while the grasses continue to come in - especially in the more recently seeded areas.
Water has collected in the bottoms of several of the reclaimed quarry areas. The State Engineer requires that
this water be properly permitted or decreed, or that provisions are made to release captured water within 72
hours of impoundment. Holcim must contact the State Engineer's office to determine what options are
available to deal with the water retained in these areas, and provide DRMS with the appropriate documentation
of the resolution of this issue before the site can be released.
Water quality data collected from the monitoring wells associated with the CKD disposal cell must also be
submitted to DRMS for review to determine if additional actions are needed for the protection of groundwater
at the site, or if monitoring activities can be discontinued.
With the exceptions of the issues noted above, the overall reclamation at the site has been very well done and is
progressing well at this time. It is possible that the northern area of the site (where vegetation has been in place
longest, and no water has been impounded) may be eligible for release near the end of this season. Site
boundary markers should be established in reclaimed areas prior to release, so that it can be easily determined
what areas subject to post law reclamation requirements.
I & E Contact Address
Michael Toelle
Holcim Inc.
3500 Highway 120
Florence, CO 81226
