Processing Waste
The Refuse Disposal Area(RDA) was traversed on foot. All areas are well vegetated with
notable changes in diversity and species depending on the age of the reclaimed parcels that
make up the RDA. The RDA appeared stable with no sign of any erosion, slumping, or
damage of any kind. Roof bolts remain scattered across the pile and should be removed as
ground conditions allow. The northwest slope of the RDA is shown below.
Revegetation
Abundant precipitation in the first half of June has resulted in excellent growth of grasses and
forbs on the reclaimed area. Western wheatgrass, Smooth brome, and the forb, cicer
milkvetch, continue to thrive along with many other grasses and annual species. Another
inspection for knapweed plants resulted only in finding the two that had been noted in a
previous inspection. No herbicide treatment to these weeds was apparent at this time.
Landowners have recently expressed concerns about the increasing number of shrubs in the
area of former mine water pond 3, east of refuse area pond 4. The greater pond 3 area is
shown in the photograph below, center of photograph.
4
