Canada lynx: The proposed project activities will not disturb any suitable lynx denning habitat
or reproductive habitat. It will not affect summer and winter foraging habitat, or migration
habitat. Track surveys have been conducted in the E-Seam project area during the past two
• winters. No lynx tracks were encountered during these surveys. The surveys also showed that
snowshoe hare numbers, which are the primary prey of lynx during the winter, are very low. This
further reduces the chances that lynx, other than a chance occurrence would be found in the area.
Project activities will not affect individual lynx, in the short-term, during project implementation
by construction noise and elevated human presence causing lynx to avoid using the project area
s as reproductive, foraging, or migration/dispersal habitat. Long-term and cumulative effects on
• Canada lynx are not expected.
Endangered Fish: Four federally listed endangered species (Colorado pikeminnow,
humpback chub, bonytail chub, and razorback sucker) occur in offsite areas including the
• Gunnison and Colorado Rivers.
Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly: The Uncompahgre fritillary butterfly is restricted to the
higher San Juan Mountains in southern Colorado. This species is not expected to occur in the
project area due to habitat constrictions.
Clay-loving wild buckwheat: This species is not expected to occur in the project area due to
habitat constrictions.
Uinta Basin Hookless Cactus: To date no Unita Basin Hookless Cactus have been located
during surveys in this portion of the Gunnison Forest.
Yellow-billed Cuckoo: To date no yellow-billed cuckoos have been located during surveys in
potentially suitable habitat in the Gunnison Forest. They have been found in suitable habitat
along the North Fork of the Gunnison River. Suitable habitat for these birds is lacking in the
project area.
Gunnison sage grouse: To date no Gunnison sage grouse have been located during surveys in
this portion of the Gunnison Forest. There is no suitable habitat for these birds in the project
area.
Boreal toad: No suitable habitat for this species is found in the E-Seam Panels 2 & 3 MDW or
Panels 3 & 4 exploration areas. There are ponds at higher elevations in the project area that
could be used by the toads, but none have been observed at these locations.
USFS REGION 2 SENSITIVE SPECIES
The USDA Forest Service Region 2 lists a total of 58 terrestrial vertebrates, fish, invertebrates
and plant species, which occur, potentially occur, or habitat for which occurs in the GMUG as
sensitive. A review of information on these species shows that for 17 species either they are
5
