located has died out more since last and there is limited overhead cover at the nest site. Several
accipiter nest sites that had been located during previous surveys were checked and found to be
inactive this year. Some have been inactive for several years.
Other raptors - No raptor nests were found in oakbrush/mountain shrub. The lack of nests in
oakbrush/mountain shrub was not unexpected, as only one great-horned owl nest has been found
in this habitat type during seven years of surveys conducted in the North Fork Valley. In that case
the nest was located in a large Gambel oak adjacent to an aspen stringer. This lack of nesting by
raptors in oakbrush dominated habitat has also been the case at studies conducted by Monarch &
Associates elsewhere in Colorado over the past 13+ years.
Great-horned owls were again observed in the area, but no young were observed with these
birds.
Table 4
RAPTOR NEST LOCATIONS
Nest location number corresponds to number on Figure 1.
Species Status Nest Site
ti
F?n?
1-07 Red-tailed hawk Active 2007-2 young Aspen
Active 2008-2 young 107 2W
Inactive 2009
-07 Red-tailed hawk ctive 2007 - 2 young Aspen 38 52 42 N
Inactive 2008 107 26 04 W
Active 2009-number
of young unknown
-08 Red-tailed hawk Active 2008-2 young Douglas-fir 38 51 53 N
Active 2009-3 young 107 27 04 W
-07 Cooper's hawk Active 2007-number Aspen 38 53 04N
of young unknown 107 23 35 W
Inactive-2008
Inactive 2009
-07 Cooper's hawk Inactive-2007 Aspen 38 52 56 N
Active 2008-2 young 107 25 49 W
Inactive 2009
-07 Cooper's hawk Active-2007 - number Aspen 38 52 50 N
of young unknown 107 25 41 W
Inactive 2008
Inactive 2009
-07 Unknown Inactive-2007 Aspen 38 52 49 N
Inactive-2008 107 25 37 W
Inactive -2009
12
