Revegetation
Revegetation success was not closely inspected, due to early stage of the growing season and focus on
erosional issues. Wheat cover crop was evident in various areas seeded last fall, and perennial grasses had
very recently germinated in some of the 2008 seeded locations.
Progress has been made with respect to control and suppression of noxious weed infestations in a number of
locations (such as depicted in Photos#1 and#2); however weed control is an on-going aspect of the reclamation
operation. Whitetop is still present in various locations, including areas along the tie across haul road and in the
vicinity of Stock Pond T-18. Canada thistle and houndstongue are still widespread throughout the reclamation
area, with dense patches in some locations.
The fenced shrub planting area in the lower portion of the 017 reclaimed watershed was observed. 1 gallon size
containerized aspen and upland shrubs were planted in the fall of 2008. In addition, a large; number of 6 to 8
foot tall bare root wilding aspen and some chokecherry were transplanted from the"aspen farm"area on site, at
the same time. The commercial containerized plants appeared healthy and robust; almost all of the bare root
transplants were leafless and may be dead (roots may have dried out during the transplanting/transporting
process). Weedguard fabric was used in the planting, but in many instances, it appears that the fabric may have
been covered over too deeply with soil.
Revegetation/Reclamation success will be evaluated more closely later in the growing season.
1i -4—
dt C r 0 f,:p 60-c 4 l c F- C/ 7 "o ci-n lo'
6
