Pond Design Checklist
Page 3
13. Could dam failure cause loss of life or serious property damage?
No, because based on the following observations, there is enough area in the flat area
downstream from the pond and in Sylvester Gulch channel (downstream from flat area)
to accommodate the pond discharge after failure.
Maximum water volume in pond = 1.2 million gallons =13,333 cf
Half of the water (6667 cf) from the pond could cover part of the flat area a short distance
downstream from the pond: 67 ft wide X 1 ft deep X 100 ft long (the flat area is much
larger than 67 ft wide X 100 ft long).
The other half of the water could cover an area in a broad Sylvester Gulch channel,
downstream from the flat area, measuring 200 ft long X 1 ft deep X 34 ft wide. (The
Sylvester Gulch channel is at least 1500 ft longer than this and is much wider than this.)
This water would flow downstream to a narrower channel area approximately 200 ft long,
immediately upstream from Highway 133 that is roughly 6 ft wide by 12 ft deep.
It would take an estimated 128 seconds for all of the water (13,333 cf) to pass through
the 8 ft X 6 ft concrete box culvert underneath Highway 133 (which is 3600 ft
downstream from the pond) if flow velocity is 5 fps and the culvert flows at half its
maximum cross-sectional capacity.
