0 Electron Microprobe Analysis
Section 1
Introduction
1.1 Background
1.1.1 Mining History
The Sunday Group and Van 4 mines are located in the Uravan Mineral Belt in southwest
Colorado. The Sunday Group mines consist of 5 underground uranium-vanadium
mines. The Sunday Group mines are all located on the south side of Big Gypsum Valley
in San Miguel County, Colorado. The Van 4 Mine is located approximately 10 miles
north of the Sunday Group mines in Montrose County, Colorado. The Van 4 mine is
located on Monument Mesa on the south side of Paradox Valley.
The Sunday Group mines are essentially developing the same uranium-vanadium
deposit. The mines are delineated based on claim ownership and permit status. The
Sunday Mines group includes:
• • The Sunday Mine;
• The Carnation Mine;
• The St. Jude Mine;
• The West Sunday Mine; and
• The Topaz Mine.
The Sunday Group mines have been operated on an intermittent basis since the mid
1950's. A decline adit, a small development rock area (DRA), and ancillary infrastructure
are present at each mine. Underground workings of the Sunday, Carnation, St. Jude, and
West Sunday mines are interconnected. These mines are currently active, and ore and
development rock are currently being extracted via the decline adits at the Sunday, St.
Jude, and West Sunday mines. Underground workings at the Topaz mine are not
currently interconnected with the other Sunday mines.
The Van 4 mine is not currently active, although production is planned to commence in
the future. The affected area of the mine includes a small development rock area, a
headframe, shaft portal, and other ancillary infrastructure. The headframe services a
vertical shaft that accesses existing underground mine workings. The uranium-
vanadium deposit present at the Van 4 is similar in nature to the Sunday Group deposit
. and occurs in the same geological formation.
1
T:\64986-Denison Mines\Task Order 3 - DMO Sampling and Analysis Plan\Task 3.12 - Soil, Ore, Rock Data Assessment Report\Bioa ailability\DenisonEMPText02l709 (2).doc
