0 Section 2
Investigation Approach and Activities
The investigation approach for this evaluation is described in detail in Development
Rock, Ore, and Soil Characterization Data Collection Work Plan (CDM 2008). This section
summarizes the investigation approach and activities completed at the Van 4 Mine to
evaluate metals concentrations and physical properties of mine development rock,
ore, and soils.
2.1 Field Sampling
This section presents field sampling activities for development rock and ore,
background soil, and native soil underlying development rock stockpiles.
2.1.1 Development Rock Samples
The development rock pile at the Van 4 Mine was sampled via trenching in August
2008. A total of three trenches were completed and three samples (WRV4-1 to WRV4-
3) were collected from the development rock pile. Maps showing the location of the
trenches are shown in Figure 2-1 and photographs of the trenches and sampling
activities are included in Attachment 2.
2.1.2 Background Soil Samples
Two background soil samples were collected in areas upslope from the existing mine
is facilities to estimate background metal concentrations. Background soil samples were
collected by hand using a trowel at a relatively shallow depth of 0 to 12 in. The
background soils samples were collected approximately 1,000 feet north of areas of
surface mine disturbance. The location of these samples is shown on Figure 2-1.
2.1.3 Native Soil Underlying Development Rock Stockpiles
One native surface and subsurface soil/ rock sample located near each the
development rock area was also collected. This soil sample facilitates assessment of
soil underlying the development rock areas, which may be in contact with seepage
from the development rock areas. These samples were collected from natural soils
located adjacent to the development rock storage facilities to provide a sample
representative of soils underlying the stockpiles. The location of this samples is also
shown on Figure 2-1.
2.2 Laboratory Analyses
In order to understand the potential for acid- or toxic forming materials to be present
at the Van 4 Mine, laboratory analyses were completed to evaluate:
¦ Acid-forming potential;
¦ Total metals content;
¦ Meteoric Water Mobility Procedure (MWMP);
•
2-1
7:\64986-Denison Mines\Ta
