SECT%O/7 >
/nlioeucfion
9 Exhibit 1-1. Summary of the Status of Specified Facilities at the Van 4 Mine
Specified Facilities Facility Status
Leach facilities, or heap leach
ad Not Present
Tailings storage or disposal
areas Not Present
Impoundments Not Present
Waste rock piles Present
Stock piles, temporary or
permanent Not currently present, but stockpiles will be present when production
resumes
Land application sites Not Present
The Van 4 Mine is not currently operating (i.e., generating ore) and therefore, only
waste rock piles (development rock area) are present. Development rock is material
that must be excavated to facilitate mine development, but that does not contain
adequate metals content to constitute ore. This investigation focused on evaluation of
development rock in the existing development rock area to determine if these
materials are potentially acid- or tocix-forming.
1.3 Land Uses in Area of Mine
The post-mining land uses at the Van 4 Mine are established in the BLM Management
Plan for the area (San Juan-San Miguel Resource Management Plan, BLM 1985). The
affected areas of the Van 4 Mine are included within Multiple Use Emphasis Area E-
• Mineral Resources. Management activities for areas with this designation are defined
as follows (BLM 1985):
Management direction will emphasize mineral development on public lands.
Mineral values indicate significant reserves of valuable minerals are present
and development is either currently ongoing or will occur in the near future.
Other resource uses will occur to the extent they are compatible with mineral
development. Limited expenditures of public resources will be used on
developing the present land resources. Livestock grazing will continue,
wildlife habitat will be maintained where feasible, and cultural resources will
receive protection currently afforded by law.
As described in the BLM Management Plan, BLM intends to manage this area
primarily for mineral development. Motorized recreation is authorized in the area
and livestock are permitted. Reductions in livestock use are planned where needed to
minimize impacts to mineral development and reclamation.
1.4 Description of Rock Materials Exposed by Mining
Rock material currently exposed by mining at the Van 4 Mine is development rock.
However, once mining operations commence again, ore would also be exposed at the
site. Ore is extracted from the Top Rim Sandstone unit, which occurs in the upper
portion of the Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation. Development rock
consists of non-mineralized or weakly mineralized Top Rim sandstone and non-
. mineralized siltstone from adjacent rock units.
1-3
T164966-Denison Mines\Te
