11111
0 SCOPE
This report presents the results of our Slope Stability Evaluation for the
Pikeview Quarry pit highwall, where a rock slide occurred the morning of December
2, 2008. The slide was a rapid failure, with the majority of the movement occurring
over a period of less than 2 minutes. The volume of the slide material was
estimated by others to be between 1,500,000 and 2,500,000 cubic yards. Our
purpose was to evaluate the stability of the existing slide mass and adjacent
highwall for safety and to assist the mine operators with improving the long-term
stability of the highwall. This report includes descriptions of current conditions, our
interpretation of site geology, a description of subsurface and ground water
conditions, and our engineering analysis of the stability of the highwall and slide.
We believe the study was completed in general conformance with our proposal
dated March 12, 2009 (CTLIT Proposal No. CS-09-0036).
• The report was prepared based on conditions interpreted from aerial
photographs, current topography of the site, discussion with mine personnel, field
reconnaissance mapping of the site, review of previous reports provided by the
mine, engineering analysis, and our experience. Site-specific investigations for
mitigation or observations made during quarry operations may indicate conditions
that require revision or re-evaluation of some of the criteria presented in this report.
The criteria presented are for the project as described. Revision in the scope of the
project could influence our recommendation. If changes occur, we should review
the plans and their effect on our recommended mitigation.
SITE HISTORY
No records exist as to when the first mining occurred on this site, but it
apparently was in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Initially the primary use of the site
was to produce dusting lime that was used in the many underground coal mines
operated southeast of this site in the early 1900's. Apparently, lime for agricultural
purposes was also produced. A lime kiln was present on the site at one time.
n
U
TRANSIT MIX AGGREGATES 1
PIKEVIEW QUARRY SLOPE
CTLIT PROJECT NO.
