Sherman
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
This office appreciates the continued annual submittals of the Reclamation Report for the Pitch Project, and the quality
of those reports. After reviewing the recent report dated April 16, 2009, we have a few questions about some of the
information contained therein.
Mention was made of a slope slump above the east wall of the South Pit, which will require regrading and revegetation
in 2009. Little description of the slump was included, though the slope movement vectors on Figure Iindicated a local
area of somewhat dramatic movement high on the slope. Was this due to hydrostatic pressure backed up behind the
pegmatite dike? If so, is surface grading considered adequate remedy?
Also of interest was the summary of seeps and springs shown on Table 2, particularly the increase in flow during 2007
and 2008, for features IC-4, IC-10, IC-12, CFS and CFS-2. I was not able to locate those features on the report map,
but would like to know where they are. Could you please provide a description or a map indicating where those
features are?
I look forward to again inspecting the permit in 2009, to view the stability and establishment of the long-term
reclamation and the remediation of newer issues. I will contact you when I am able to schedule an inspection.
Thank you again for the thorough report. I can be reached at the Division's Durango field office: 691 CR 233, Room
A-2, Durango, CO 81301; telephone 970-247-5193.
Sincerely,,
Bob Oswald
Environmental Protection Specialist
Ec: Steve Shuey, DRMS Grand Junction
Cc: Vern Kelso, Homestake Pitch Reclamation, Sargents, CO
(c:\09-05 dots\pitch 09 recl rpt slope/rco)
Office of Office of
Mined Land Reclamation Denver _9 Grand Junction • Durango Active and Inactive Mines
