Christy Woodward
July 31, 2008
Page 4
top surface at angles perpendicular to the development rock lavers. Figures 4 through F show
the planned locations of the sampling trenches.
The trenches are designed to excavate through the surficial laver of displaced rock on the
running surface of the facility and to expose the underlying development rock construction
lavers. A composite sample will then be collected from each trench, which is representative of
the layers exposed by the trench. Three trenches and three corresponding composite samples
are planned to be collected from each development rock area with the exception of the
Carnation Mine. The development rock areas at the Carnation Mine have been generally
reclaimed and vegetation is currently established in these areas. In lieu of sample collection,
visual observation of the development rock will be conducted to confirm that the material is
similar to the development rock encountered at the other Sunday Group mines. Accordingly,
the development rock data collected from the other Sunday Group mines will be used to
characterize the Carnation %line.
11
SuAlciaf Layer Resulting from
Grading of Running Surface
` Planned Sampling Trench
Perpendicular to Layers •
of Development Rock
Current Area of Development
- Rock Placement
(Angle of Repose Slope)
YO, L,jk
/ ZD@d1n* Adit
`- Previous Layer of Development
Rode Placed at Angle of Repose
Figure hlagranlnlatle rcl,res Ntilt1:'11 ?1C,- iollinellt rock arcas ?houllng laltt'ritig produced hl/
(acillt.y construction and orientation of planned snfnhling trenches.
Each development rock sample will be visually logged in-field for lithologv, alteration,
mineralization and grain size according the Unified Soil Classification Svstem (USCS).
Samples will be submitted for laboratorv analysis of ABA, total metals, MWMP, and a subset
of these samples will be analyzed for soil-water characteristic curves and other geotechnical
parameters. Soil-water characteristic analyses will be performed bv_ Daniel 13.
