Hydrogeological Evaluation of Sunday Mines Group
References
Ambient groundwater quality in the direct vicinity of the mines shows a distinct
chemical signature that is influenced by the natural enrichments of uranium,
vanadium and other elements associated with the ore bodies. The ambient
groundwater quality is thought to be a result of naturally occurring equilibrium
conditions between the ore minerals and groundwater. Underground mine
development activities such as tunneling, excavating rock, and ventilating the
underground workings may also affect the concentration of the naturally enriched
elements in groundwater.
Groundwater use in the direct vicinity of the Sunday Mines Group (i.e. within 2
miles) is limited to extraction of groundwater for industrial use to support
underground mining operations at the Sunday Mines Group. Four existing wells for
stock and/or domestic use are present at distances ranging from approximately 1.4 to
5 miles away from the mining areas. It is unlikely that these existing groundwater
uses would be affected by the mining operations. Future groundwater use in the
direct vicinity of the Sunday Mines Group is not likely to change markedly in the
foreseeable future because most land is owned by the federal government and the
BLM land management plan restricts most land uses. Industrial use of groundwater
to support the underground mining operations is expected to continue in the
foreseeable future, because mining is authorized on the BLM land by the General
Mining Law of 1872.
•
•
Cm 3-2
T:\64986-Denison Mines\Task Order 3 - DMO Sampling and Analysis Plan\Task 3.14 - Hydrogeology ReportUmal sunday hydro reportVext\RNAL Sunday Hydrogeology Report.doc
