Hydrogeological Evaluation of Sunday Mines Group
Geologic and Hydrologic Conditions
2.4 Local Hydrogeologic Framework
The local hydrogeologic framework is relatively complex as a result of structural
displacements associated with the Gypsum Valley anticline, the Disappointment
Valley syncline and associated faulting and folding. The Mesozoic aquifer and the
lower portion of the Tertiary to Upper Cretaceous aquifer are present in the general
vicinity of the Sunday Mines Group. The following sections provide additional detail
regarding the local hydrogeologic framework.
2.4.1 Potential Aquifers in Area of Sunday Mines Group
In order to better define the local hydrogeologic framework, the hydrogeologic units
defined by Weir et al. have been subdivided. These subdivisions are summarized in
Exhibit 2-2.
c _ _f1.-- -I 1...,7,.,.,....,1..?s;.• ,,-;+c ;" 77;r;slihI of thy Sundau Mines Groun.
•
•

Extifull G- G. 1JG lIlMUIX
Hydrogeologic v 1 -.r ...-•- -
Local - --- ---
Description
Unit Defined by Hydrologic
Weir et al. The
aquifer is overlain by shale of the
Summerville Formation, and underlain by
rock salt of the Paradox Member of the
Hermosa Formation.
Salt Wash Aquifer includes the saturated portions of the
Aquifer Saltwash Member of the Morrison Formation.
This aquifer is overlain by bentonitic shales
of the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison
Formation and is underlain by shale of the
Summerville Formation.
Tertiary to Upper Dakota Aquifer contains the saturated portion of the
Cretaceous aquifer Aquifer Dakota Sandstone and the Burro Canyon
Formation. It is overlain by the Mancos Shale
and underlain by shale of the Brushy Basin
member of the Morrison Formation.
Mesaverde Not present in the Sunday Mines Group area.
Aquifer
2-12
T:\84986-Denison Mines\Task Order 3 - DMO Sampling and Analysis Plan\Task 3.14 - Hydrogeology ReportViinal sunday hydro report\textTINAL Sunday Hydrogeology Report.doc
