• The factors above result in a wide range of uranium Kd values reported in the literature. <br />A recent compilation of literature data (EPA 1999) presents Kd values ranging from less <br />than 1 L/kg up to 10,000 L/kg. <br />Adsorption/ desorption reactions tend to occur very quickly, usually within 24 hours of <br />contact, compared to precipitation/ dissolution reactions which tend to take longer. <br />Desorption reactions tend to take longer than adsorption reactions. Often desorption <br />occurs in two stages, an initial rapid desorption followed by a slower desorption where <br />low concentrations of the element tend to bleed off of the soil/ sediment. The second <br />stage is referred to as the "tailing effect" due to the diminishing returns (little decrease <br />in concentrations) when using pump-and-treat remediation systems. <br />• <br />EA
