2.0 Potential for Adverse Impacts
HRMMR § 6.4.20(1) provides for evaluation of potential adverse impacts associated
with designated chemicals, toxic- or acid-forming materials, or acid rock drainage at
mine facilities. This section identifies facilities present at the Sunday Group Mines in
relation to the requirements of HRMMR § 6.4.20(1), and presents general discussion
regarding the potential for these facilities to contain designated chemicals, toxic- or
acid-forming materials, or acid rock drainage.
2.1 Description of Specified Mine Facilities
HRMMR § 6.4.20(1)(c) sets forth various types of mine facilities that require specific
evaluation for the presence of designated chemicals and acid- or toxic-forming
materials. Exhibit 2-1 describes the types of specified facilities that are present at the
Sunday Mines Group in relation to HRMMR § 6.4.20(1)(c):
Exhibit 2-1. These stockpiles are comprised primarily of Top Rim
sandstone. It is commonly medium grained, well rounded, gray sandstone with
calcite cement. The grain size of the rock particles ranges from fine sand to boulders.
The medium diameter is approximately 2 inches based on a general visual evaluation.
Local zones also contain reddish-brown calcareous sandstone, which was mined from
units adjacent to the Top Rim sandstone.
Development rock is rock that must be excavated to facilitate mine development, but
that does not contain adequate metals content to constitute ore. Development rock
piles are located at each of the individual mines that compose the Sunday Mines
Group. Ore is rock that contains sufficient uranium and vanadium to warrant
processing at the Denison mill near Blanding, Utah. Temporary ore stockpiles are
currently located at the Sunday, St. Jude, West Sunday, and Topaz mines; the
temporary stockpiles are typically transported to the mill on a daily to weekly basis.
Exhibit 2-2 describes the type, status and size of specific facilities at each mine within
the Sunday Mines Group.
E
2-1
T:164986-Denison Mines\Task Order 4 - EPP Sunday Mines GroupTINAL EPPTINAL - Environmental Protection Plan Sunday Mines.doc
