Hydrologic Overview
• Surface Flow System - The generalized hydrology ofthe proposed test area (see Figure
2-3) lies within the White River Basin in Colorado kk'ater Division 0 (Topper and others, 2003),
The RD&D Lease Tract lies between Ryan GUIC11 (Intermittent flow) and perennial Black
Sulphur Creek that hoth flow northeastward about six miles before joining %kith Piceance Creek.
From the junction with Ryan Gulch and Black SUlphur ('reek, the Piceanee Creek flows
northward ahout 10 miles and discharges into the \Vhite River west of Rio Blanco Lake. The
area is Spal-SCly populated. mainly with isolated ranches.
•
•
Recharge is seasonal in nature, mostly troll Snow nlclt that accumulates during tile \vInter
months. The RD&D Lease Tract is outside of substantial natural recharge (Topper and others,
2003). Surface rCChalge in the area infiltrates throU`gh a thick unsaturated zone downward to the
upper aquifer, and, given sufficient elevation and permeability in the Mahogany Zone (see
hclow), through the lower ayuiter to discharge into the surface drainages as springs or stream
flow. Figure 2-3 showS the surface-ground Water flow system in the area. The HMSO lllite
Mining Interval lies below the Dissolution Surface and nahcohtlc oil shale. Which are below the
ground water flows depicted in Figure 2-3. 'The illite shale upper boundary is approxinlatel_v at
the top of the Garden Gulch Member.
wRecharged water moves through the
upper and lower bedrock aquifers
WEST and discharges to the stream volleys EAST
Recharge Recharge
mta pbrm c Valley-fill
f Pa ,
o Of Grac h rte C and uPPer alluvium Upper aquifers
?, eel RI .reek 4Ae Part ,
ver Form rnba,s
anon
Ma110
of
9anY ion focmat1On
parachute Creek Member of Green River
?
