Western Mining District 18-Left Shaft Site Baseline Soil Investigation
0
OVERVIEW
An upland soil investigation was conducted north of a minor tributary to Fish Creek
and immediately adjacent to and west of Routt County Road 27 for the Peabody's
Twentymile Coal Company (TMCC) in Routt County, Colorado. This investigation
will be used to support TMCC's proposed construction of Western Mining District 18-
Left vent shaft facility and access road to this facility. This soil investigation complies
with the soil requirements contained in Section 2.04.9 of the Regulations of the
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (DRMS) for Coal Mining. Soil
descriptions were recorded from 6 continuous soil cores located within the proposed 54
acre vent shaft facility study area. The soil cores were located in Township 5 North,
Range 87 West, Section 23 (Sheet 1). The soil investigation was conducted on
November 11 and 12, 2008 by Kenneth E. Carlson, a Certified Professional Soil Scientist
(#2824) with Habitat Management, Inc.
SOIL CORE LOCATIONS
Six continuous soil cores were located and excavated with a Giddings drill rig and with
within the land block proposed for the proposed vent shaft pad (Sheet 1). These upland
soil cores were excavated up to a depth of 60 inches, a lithic contact or parent material
and did not encounter any groundwater.
SOIL DESCRIPTIONS
Each soil core was described by horizon following accepted United States Department
of Agriculture Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) soil survey procedures
for the following parameters: horizon depth; field texture; Munsell color (matrix and
mottles); root presence and depth; soil structure; and effervescence. Additional soil
descriptions were recorded as needed. Photographs were taken of each soil core after
characterization. Major soil horizons are defined for each soil core in the photographs.
Field soil descriptions for each soil core are contained Appendix 1. Photographs of the
soil cores are contained in Appendix 2. NRCS soil series descriptions of the potentially
affected soils are contained in Appendix 3.
E
Habitat Management, Inc. 1 01/12/2009
