The carehales may intercept the "?" and Twentymile Sandstones. In addition, the corehales will most likely
r intercept the Lennox, Wadge and possibly Sage Creek coal units. Yt is not anticipated that the carehales will
intercept the underlying Tract Creep Sandstone. Figure I , Cer?e?a? '?ra?igrap?ric "o?ur?r? - ?au?t uur?ty area,
shows the general stratigraphy far the Sage Creek area.
Surface Topagraph?: The general topography afthe area is characterized by relatively gentle north-northeast
facing, moderately sloping, side slope benches and ridges, with steep south-south rest facing escarpments an the
east and south end ofthe project area. Topographic reliefin the proposed exploration area is appraxirraately ?,SaO
feet to 7,2a0 feet.
Geola icg Setting: foal bearing strata of the pra?ect area are part of the Yles and llllan?s Fork Fannatians of the
Mesaverde Group. The coals ofprirnaxy economic intezest are designated as the Middle Caal Group, and include
the Lennox, V?adge, Sage Creek and Wolf Creek coal seams. These units and their stratigraphic sequences are
illustrated in Figure I.
The prapased exploration area is located in the southern extension of the WaskakilSand'V?ash Structural Basin.
The basin is bordered an the east the Park Range Anticline and an the southwest by the Axial Basin Anticline.
Stratigraphically, the Middle Coal Group eras deposited het?reer? two regressive sandstone deposits. Surface
expressions afthese two sandstone units, the Twentymile Sandstone Member ofthe Williams Fork Formation,
and the Trout Creek Sandstone Member afthe Iles Formation appear s prominent cliff forming units throughout
the Williams Fork Mountains.
The coal seams in the project area occur within a localized structural basin, with the axis both trending and
plunging to the north. It is defined by the Tav? Creek Anticline an the east, the Sage Creek Anticline an the west.
The Fish Creek Anticline and ashakie Syncline trend northwest through the project area. Dips range from
approximately 9° along the east flank of the Sage Creek Anticline, to 15 - 20° to the north. Faulting associated
`? with the Taw Creek Anticline has been identified within the area by U.S. Geological Survey geologists. ether
faulting in the area is likely, but not v?rell understood, and better definition of the occurrence and extent of faulting
is one ofthe primary objectives afthe prapased exploration program.
Surface Water Resources: The project area is bounded an the north and northwest by Sage Creek, and to the east
and southeast by Grassy Creek, perennial tributaries to the ?'ampa River. The drainage areas that i'law northwest
toward Sage Creek are characterized by ephemeral flows, typically flowing only in response to spring snQwmelt
and summer precipitation. Subwatersheds that drain eastward to Grassy Creek include Scatchman's Gulch and
Annand's Draw and are characterized by ephemeral ar intermittent streamflows. The proposed exploration
drilling will be conducted sa as not to adversely impact any of the potentially affected drainages.
SCC, as part of its Seneca II Kline and Yaast Mine aperationss evaluated Grassy Creek, Scatchman's Gulch,
Annand's Draw and Sage Creek far Alluvial galley Flaars ?A?Fs}. The A?F evaluations were conducted in
accordance with Colorado program A'F guidelines; the CDRM determined there were na A?Fs along brassy
Creek, Scatchman's Gulch and Annand's Draw within the exploration area. There are several small fields slang
Sage Creek that meet the A?F criteria, but they are all upstream of the project area. BLM, as part of the Coal
Suitability Review far the Little Snake Resource Management Plan, evaluated lands with federal coal to
determine ifmining would interrupt, discontinue or preclude fanning operations. The BLM did not identify any
A?'Fs in the project area.
,Groundwater Resources: Groundwater occurrence within the project area is generally limited to the Trout Creek
and Twentymile sandstone units and the shallow alluviallcalluvial aquifers associated with
?5'age ('reek !'rnje?r • 2f10?
