JWW/MCS <br />10/94 <br />The Bowbac series consists of moderately deep, well drained soils formed in alluvium, eolian deposits <br />or residuum derived primarily from argillaceous sandstone. They occupy dissected fan remnants, fan <br />piedmonts, hillslopes, pediments, ridges and buttes. Slopes are 0 to 15 percent and both simple and <br />complex. The mean annual precipitation is about 13 inches, and the mean annual temperature is about <br />46 degrees F. <br />TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, mesic Ustic Haplargids <br />TYPICAL PEDON: Bowbac sandy loam-on a northeast facing slope of 1 percent under native <br />vegetation. (Colors are for dry soil unless otherwise stated.) <br />A-0 to 3 inches; brown (10YR 5/3) sandy loam, dark brown (10YR 3/3) moist; weak fine and very <br />fine granular structure; soft, very friable, nonsticky nonplastic; many fine and very fine roots; <br />neutral (pH 6.8); abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 7 inches thick) <br />Bt1--3 to 25 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) sandy clay loam, brown (10YR 4/3) moist; moderate <br />coarse and medium prismatic structure parting to moderate medium and coarse angular blocky; <br />hard, friable, slightly sticky and plastic; common fine and very fine, few medium and coarse <br />roots; many distinct clay films on faces of peds; neutral (pH 7.2); clear wavy boundary. (8 to 24 <br />inches thick) <br />Bt2--25 to 31 inches; yellowish brown (10YR 5/4) sandy clay loam, dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/4) <br />moist; moderate medium and coarse subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, friable, slightly <br />sticky and slightly plastic; few medium fine and very fine roots; common distinct clay films on <br />faces of peds; mildly alkaline (pH 7.6); clear wavy boundary.
