Evaluation of Soils for Reclamation Potential
The soils and parent materials on the study area were rated for suitability based on criteria
presented in Table 2.04.9-2, Criteria for Evaluating Soil Suitability. These suitability criteria were
approved by CDMG in the Permit Amendment for the expansion west of 2700 Road.
Recommended topsoil salvage depths were generated for each sampled pedon and each
component of a mapping unit. Salvage depths were determined following a detailed evaluation of
PH, electrical conductivity, saturation percent, soil texture, Sodium Adsorption Ratio, calcium
carbonate percent, and coarse fragment percent. Threshold suitability criteria shown in Table
2.04.9-2 were modified in conjunction with the NRCS as part of TR-57 in 2008.
Topsoil salvage depths were based on average depths to the suspect parameter or average profile
depths (if the entire profile was suitable) across the study area based on numerous soil profile
descriptions obtained for each soil type.
Table 2.04.9-2: Criteria for Evaluating Soil Suitability (Revised with NRCS 2008)
PARAMETER - UNITS
THRESHOLD SUITABILITY LEVELS'
PH
Conductivity (mmhos/cm)
Saturation percentage (%)
Sodium adsorption ratio'
Exchangeable Sodium %
Calcium carbonate percentage
Selenium (ppm)
Particle size'
Coarse fragments (%)5
Prime Farmland
Lift A
<6.1->8.4
4.02
>80%
<25%
>4
>15
15%
>.2 ppms
All soil textures except
>15%
>10% 3" diam +
Prime Farmland Lift B
and Single-Lift Soils
<6.1->8.4
4.02
>80%
<25%
>4
>40%
>1 ppms
s, Is, sc, sic, c
>35% one location;
(>25% average)
(Revised June 2008) 2.04.9-13
