MINE ID # OR PROSPECTING ID #: M-1 97R-i m
INSPECTION DATE: 4/2Q/2(1n9 INSPECTOR=S INITIALS: 11F
OBSERVATIONS
This was an inspection of the Shipps Pit, DRMS file# M-1978-102. This inspection was done in order to
determine a financial warranty amount to facilitate a permit transfer from the Colorado Department of
Transportation to the current landowner. This site is located about 2.5 miles east of the town of Nunn,
Colorado in Weld County. I, Jared Ebert of the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety conducted
the inspection. Mr. Gary DeWitt of the Colorado Department of Transportation and Mrs. Debbie Shipps
accompanied me on the inspection.
The current approved permit area is 9.4 acres. The site is situated along Lone Tree Creek where past
excavation occurred. It appears that no excavation has occurred in or near the creek for some time. As one
drives into the site, the creek runs to the east of the haul road, the current mining disturbance and stockpiles
are located to the west of the haul road. The entire site was walked and the permit boundary was measured
and recorded with a Trimble GPS Unit. Based off these measurements, the permit boundary markers seem to
be slightly misplaced. The current markers delineate an area of 8.24 acres about 1.2 acres less than what is
currently approved. This is cited as a problem at the end of this report. A map of the Divisions findings is
enclosed with this report.
The current disturbed area was found to be approximately 3.52 acres. Within the disturbed area there is a
highwall excavation, a pit excavation, and five stockpiles of material. The highwall is 10 -12 feet in height and
the slopes were measured to be at a 1.6:1 horizontal to vertical ratio (see Figure 1 and 2). Also, there is a
small 15 foot pit excavation, the north and south side slopes were measured to be at a 1.7:1 horizontal to
vertical ratio. The east and west pit slopes are considerably gentler; they were set at a 7:1 horizontal to
vertical ratio (see Figure 3 and 4). There are five different stockpiles of material within the disturbed area; a
small cone shaped asphalt pile, a topsoil pile, a cobble pile, and two sand and gravel piles (See Figure 6 and 7).
Based on the disturbance observed at the site, a financial warranty of $7,711 will need to be submitted for
the permit transfer to be approved. This will be addressed under a separate letter from the Division.
2
