Peabody
Twentymile Coal Company
November 14, 2007
Mr. Daniel I. Installation of the shaft heater will allow for heating of ventilation intake air during
the winter months to maintain safe and comfortable temperature and humity conditions in underground mine
work areas. The planned 18RT Shaft Heater Installation will be constructed entirely within the existing
18RT shaft pad area, will result in no new surface disturbance, and will not affect existing drainage and
sediment control structures. Construction will involve:
• Extension by Yampa Valley Electric Association of their existing service-lines to the shaft location
(line extensions will be constructed by YVEA on fee lands, and YVEA will own, maintain, and be
responsible for removal of the lines at such time as they are no longer needed)
• Installation of two power-distribution drop-poles on the existing shaft pad
• Placement and anchoring of a pre-fabricated propane-fired heater unit and associated duct-work on
the existing reinforced concrete shaft collar structure
• Installation of a buried power cable feed between the existing emergency hoist house and the shaft
heater
• Installation of a skid-mounted propane tank and connecting line(s) on the existing shaft pad in
proximity to the shaft heater
At such time as the 18RT Shaft Heater Installation is no longer needed to support ongoing or future mining
and related operations, the heater installation components will be disassembled and salvaged for re-use or
will be demolished, and the associated disturbance areas reclaimed as part of final reclamation for the 18RT
Shaft installation.
This submittal includes revised PAP text, exhibits, and maps, addressing the location, configuration,
operation, maintenance, and reclamation of the proposed 18RT Shaft Heater Installation. New and revised
PAP materials are identified by the attached Summary of Revisions/Additions. TCC would like to proceed
with this project as soon as possible, so that construction can be completed under favorable weather and
G: \Environmental\REVISION\MINOR-RV\MR07-225 18RT Shaft Heater Installation\MR07-225 18RT Shaft Heater
TL. doc
