Sherman
Executive Director
Ronald W. Cattany
Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
Twentymile Coal Company (TCC) submitted NPDES Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMR), for CPDS
permit COG-850048 on April 30, 2009, for first quarter 2009. CPDS permit COG-850048 was issued to
TCC for emergency mine water discharge from the l ORT borehole (one outfall 001 A/001 W) in order to
comply with MSHA direction. COG-85-0048 was issued 8/28/2008. TCC reported that Outfall
001 A/001 W discharged each week during January through February, and part of March 2009. Equipment
failure resulted in no discharge from Outfall 001A/001W following March 17, 2009. The pump was
repaired and pumping from this Outfall resumed on April 1, 2009.
TCC measured parameter exceedances for total recoverable Iron for first quarter 2009. These exceedances
were reported to CDPH&E. This is the third consecutive quarter that this outfall has exceeded the total
recoverable iron standard. TCC reported that they are coordinating with consultants for a treatment
method for this location.
This outfall also exceeded the 30-day average for TDS, but passed WET testing. The operator is
investigating treatment options for this outfall.
The report is in compliance with Rule 4.15.13(2)(iii).
