Sylvester Gulch Shafts #1 and #2
Proposed Ventilation, Intake Air Heaters and Nitrogen Supply Facilities
Construction Project Plan
Purpose
The purpose of these additional facilities is to provide the following.
• Ventilation supply (forced intake air) through Shaft #1.
• Intake ventilation air heat as required to maintain the ventilation air through both Shaft #1 and
Shaft #2 fans above freezing temperatures during the winter months. The air flow through the
existing Shaft #2 fans will be reversed to provide forced intake air through Shaft #2 when the
new Shaft 41 fan is commissioned.
• A permanent nitrogen gas supply facility to serve underground longwall mining operations.
Project Description
The project consists of constructing the additional facilities described below on the existing Shafts #1
and #2 pads. All construction activities will occur within the existing disturbed area. The additional
facilities described below are shown on the attached drawing, "Proposed Fan, Heater and Nitrogen
Facilities", and updated permit Map 53B, "Surface Facilities, Sylvester Gulch Facilities Area". All
facilities will be structural steel buildings on reinforced concrete foundations. Table 1 shows the
approximate quantities for steel structures and concrete foundations for the facilities listed below.
Shaft #1 Ventilation Fan and Intake Air Heating Facilities
The facilities to be added consist of the following.
1. TLT-Babcock 2,500 hp Ventilation Fan Equipment and Ducting to Shaft 91.
2. Fan Motor Building -16 feet wide by 22 feet long.
3. Fan Lubrication Unit Building - 12 feet wide by 12 feet long.
4. Fan MCC Building - 12 feet wide by 16 feet long.
5. Transformer Pad - 12 feet wide by 16 feet long.
6. Heater Facility - 20 feet wide by 20 feet long.
Prior to construction of any of the above facilities, the existing Shaft #1 Intake Air Heating Facility will
be removed in its entirety, including existing concrete foundations.
Shaft #2 Intake Air Heating Facilities
A steel building approximately 20 feet wide by 20 feet long will be constructed to house the
electrical/control equipment and methane delivery pumps and piping. The methane supply will be
provided from the existing 8" buried supply line that is located just south of this facility, via
approximately 60 feet of new buried pipe.
Nitrogen Supply Facility
A steel building approximately 36 feet wide by 72 feet long will be constructed to house the
compressors, nitrogen generator and electrical/control equipment for nitrogen supply. The supply piping
from this facility will be connected to the existing buried 6" supply pipe from the existing temporary
