C/fgo 007
Kaldenbach, Tom /?IR - R'v
From: Welt, Kathy [KWelt@archcoal.com]
Sent: Friday, May 01, 2009 2:02 PM
To: Kaldenbach, Tom
Cc: Hernandez, Daniel
Subject: RE: West Elk Mine (C-80-007), MR-350 verification
Yes - and MCC has also contracted with the original design engineers to conduct a complete
evaluation and sensitivity analysis of the refuse characteristics and of the pile design so that we can
further verify the RPE stability. In fact, they were at the mine site today and took several additional
samples for analysis. I will forward your inquiry to them for review and comment as well.
xathy 'Weft,
Environmental Engineer III
Mountain Coal Company, LLC
P.O. The geotechnical data in the submittal of 4/7/09 indicates
adequate compaction, but a simple calculation of resisting force indicates less strength for the washed refuse than the
unwashed refuse (see attached spreadsheet). Can you please provide additional information or analysis that indicates
the washed refuse will result in slope stability comparable to the design in Exhibit 70.
Thank you,
Tom Kaldenbach
Environmental Protection Specialist
Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
(303) 866-3567, ext. 8128
********** Email Disclaimer **********
The information contained in this e-mail, and in any
accompanying documents, may constitute confidential and/or
legally privileged information.
